What a gem. Less than two miles each way this tidal estuary is really quite scenic, once you clear the part with the houses. Some of them are not houses at all but trailers and doublewides, consider it funky kitsch, fun in its own way. After leaving "civilization" the river takes on a wild and scenic quality. There are a few power boats but they are all at idle speed, no wake.
It's well worth a few bucks to put in at South River Outfitters since you'll know all your windows will be intact when you return. Ed Stout is a friendly guy who rents boats and can supply your forgotten needs, very nice putin. His "Keep right by the houses, left after that..." advice was worth the price of parking. There is a nice arial map of the river with boating and biking trails clearly marked.
Paddle upstream for a while and you'll come to a spot with a half dozen picnic tables and an easy take out. It is possible to go further and I did but it quickly became narrow and congested with tree limbs and such.
On my way back out I encountered a couple who asked about directions. They repeated the outfitter's Right/Left advice and I confirmed that. The gentleman then grumbled, "They should have some arrows." I did not say anything but thought to myself that this is wilderness, after all. Disney has sure changed people's expectations.
